The March Review

The have clocks changed and we've had teasers of blue skies, warmer temperatures and blossom but March didn't really deliver the full promise of Spring. Brits love weather chat so I could easily dedicate this entire post to the elusive phenomenon that is the British weather but let's stay on topic - without further ado, here's my third monthly review of 2018.

I joined a ladies' running club set up by my work which was a nice way to get social and run with colleagues at a gentle(ish) pace. Up until now I've run solo and wasn't sure how I'd find the whole running in a group thing. Overall it's been very positive and the best part is the team spirit of it all - if you feel like stopping, having a friendly face by your side cheering you on to keep going is a great motivator. Running with London landmarks like the Shard, Tate Modern and Tower Bridge in sight is also a nice change from my local area and route, although the added task of dodging commuters and tourists is interesting to say the least!

If anyone is in two minds about joining a running group or any other team sport, I fully encourage you to push yourself and try it at least once. If it's not for you at least you tried and at best, it's a great way to spend time with a group of people who have a shared interest.

So there I was making progress with my running ahead of a 10k race, only to have it postponed due to the return of the Beast from the East. Still to be rearranged, my running discipline has wavered slightly but I will stick to a weekly run so I'm not completely back to couch potato shape. Plus I have a bet going with a friend where I promised to run a half marathon before the end of the year. He refuses to believe it will happen and I refuse to give him the satisfaction of being right so by hook or by crook I will keep running.

Definitely inspired by the blazer wearing goddess that is Hannah Gale, I treated myself to this grey check number from Bershka (via ASOS) which is an easy way to smarten up my usual uniform of jeans and a t-shirt. I liked the contrast of the check pattern and pop of yellow colour in the lining - anything to brighten up the day is welcome at this point! And I have already followed up by ordering this striped beauty. I'm looking forward to warmer weather so I can also mix these blazers with midi skirts and dresses. Is anyone else starting to tire of jeans and boots at this point?

I'm definitely having a thing for podcasts and the first to wax lyrical about is Unpopped. In truth, all I had to hear was that the first episode was about Rupaul's Drag Race to get me listening. Produced by BBC radio, each episode puts a pop culture moment of recent times under the spotlight and subjects have included Paris Hilton and the demise of the party girl, Twin Peaks and most recently - Come Dine With Me. This isn't highbrow stuff but it's interesting to hear different perspectives about our day to day trends and habits.

And my second podcast recommendation is as far from highbrow as you can get: My Dad Wrote a Porno. I'm late to the bandwagon here but every time I need a pick me up, an episode of My Dad Wrote a Porno never fails to deliver. This one isn't for the faint-heated but if you can get past the questionable act of listening to an erotic novel read out loud and ripped to pieces by
the author's son and friends...well, you won't be sorry. I've laughed out loud both at Rocky Flintstone's unique writing style and the hilarious commentary (and sheer bewilderment and horror) of Jamie, James and Alice.

All things considered, March hasn't been a particularly exciting month. I've lacked energy and motivation for various reasons but I'm trying not to give myself a hard time and have some breathing space so I can have a clear head and really pinpoint what changes (big or small) I need to make. Self-care will be a big priority next month, what are you planning to do in April?

  1. Such lovely things! It sounds like you are doing amazing with the running, I definitely need your motivation haha :D I need to give podcasts a try, I keep meaning to! March for me has been a little of the same haha, just bracing the cold! xx

(PS I’d love to invite you to come and win a lovely bundle of Disney goodies and I’m following back on bloglovin too :D)

    1. Thanks for stopping by, Elizabeth :) ah my running motivation is lacking a little but I will keep going - it's so hard getting started but worth it when the next run is that bit easier! I think we were all patiently waiting for Spring throughout March. Let's hope April warm up and give us a boost! Have a great rest of the week!

  2. I enjoy jogging together with friends as well! It's more fun and you get to motivate each other to keep on going. I like your goal of completing a half marathon before this year ends. Good luck! Consistency is key.
I love podcasts too! I always download and listen to them while I'm on my commute. I've listened to a few of the My Dad Wrote a Porno podcast episodes and found the commentaries very entertaining!
Found you through Bloglovin', and followed you. Looking forward to reading more of your posts! :)

  3. Thank you for your lovely comment, Anna - bloglovin is great for discovering other blogs. I'll be sure to check yours out too :) Are there any podcasts that you recommend? They are a nice change to listening to music on the commute for sure. Although I live in fear that my phone will suddenly blast out 'My Dad Wrote a' when I'm on a packed train!

    1. I'm using CastBox app on my android phone :) I'm subscribed to (these are my favorites as well):

      - TED Radio Hour
      - The Minimalists Podcasts
      - Stuff You Should Know
      - How I Built This With Guy Raz

I shall write a separate blog post for these, too! :))

    2. Oh perfect, i'll have to give them a listen! Look forward to seeing your post about them too :)
